Skeptical about technology in the classroom

I love the convenience of all the tools we have today in technology! How easy it is to communicate, share documents, spreadsheets, pictures, videos, and experiences. In some database housed in some warehouse, resides a server with the intimate details of my life... What protection do we users have - as to how this information might be used by the public eye?
What laws currently exist in place to protect naive tech users, who are captivated by the allure of flashy gadgets and pretty personalization options? If we are going to introduce technology as part of the learning experience in American classrooms, shouldn't we consider first teaching our students about technology ettiquette and ethics?
